I have a very heavy 1930 s bathroom door that i have tried all the tricks to fix and it keeps pulling the screws out of the top hinge.
Fix door hinge screws stripped.
Open the door wide and insert a wedge under the bottom outside corner to level it.
A simple method of using golf tees to fix holes that have been stripped out and are to big so the screws will not tighten up the hinge to the door or jamb.
Then bore out the stripped holes.
To relocate the hinge remove the screws from the hinge and slide it up or down a few inches.
Step 3 remove the stripped screw.
If the screw of the hinge is the part that is stripped you will need to get a stripped screw remover from a hardware store.
This will wedge into the head of the screw and pull it.
Thank you for the pictures.
The wrong way is a temporary fix not cool.
My last ditch effort is to try this fix with the dowels.
Then glue and cut the dowel so it s flush with the edge of the door or hinge.
You can then drive the screw into the dowel to secure it.
Fix it the right way not the wrong way.
In these situations the best repair method is to drill out the screw hole with a 1 2 inch bit then fill the enlarged hole with a glued 1 2 inch hardwood plug or solid hardwood dowel.
Easy fixes may also be ineffective in situations where a heavy door has caused hinge screws to strip out the wood on the edge of the door or the door frame.
Remove the screws that hold the loose hinge leaf to the door jamb.
First drill a 1 8 in.
Maybe the kids swung on a gate and pulled the hinge screws out or a cupboard door was swung too wide and the screws pulled right out.
If the hinge and jamb are painted cut the paint around the leaf with a utility knife swing the leaf away from the jamb.
How to tighten stripped hinge screws.
This last time it even pulled out the screws from the bottom hinge at the frame.
Deep hole in the center of the screw head to accept the largest screw extractor that will fit the screw head.
To remove the loose wood screw drill out the stripped hole and glue in a dowel the same diameter as your drill bit.
For 12 or larger screws where the stripped screw head rests flush with the wood and you don t want to risk damage to your project turn to a screw extractor for help.
Then you ll need to fix the stripped area.
